Beauty Trend Spring/Summer 2009

Beauty Eyes Spring/Summer 2009

It's always refreshing to see a make-up artist doing something a little different from the norm, and while MAC artist Tom Pecheux kept the Marni models' lips, cheeks and skin bare for Milan Fashion Week's spring/summer 2009 show, he decided to have a little fun with their eyebrows instead. "The look is about playful, confident women," said Pecheux, who used a multitude of products to create a prominent brow - culminating in a strong, skinny line drawn along the top. Forget boundaries, it seems spring's make-up is heading in a particularly eccentric direction...

Alberta Ferretti's signature flowing chiffons might have marked another Grecian goddess collection for spring/summer 2009, but the show's beauty look took an altogether more modern twist. Drawing influence from the highly-groomed chic of the twenties, MAC artist Lucia Pieroni filled the centres of models' lips with a burgundy pencil and smudged outwards to create a beautiful berry finish, which she matched with darkened, prominent brows. Hair was left messed and fluffy, for an overall, "chic bag lady finish".

'Modern' and 'sexy' are two adjectives that spring to mind when describing the most recent Missoni designs at Milan Fashion Week, so it's no surprise that the accompanying beauty look was a sophisticated take on femininity. With bronzes and coffee shades at the base, MAC artist Charlotte Tilbury blended layers of gold and beige around the corners of the eyes, on the cheekbones and down the nose to create what she described as, "a very sculpted woman, inspired by 1970s black and white photos."

'Hard meets soft' is a concept Karl Lagerfeld is noted for playing with in his vast yearly design output, and none so more charmingly than in his spring/summer 2009 show, where the sharply-cut, leather-tinged monochrome contrasted with prettily decorative hair accessories. The intricately designed black and white headwear pieces took their cue from the stunning jewellery models wore on their arms and were gripped into the hair with kirbies, proving attention-seeking accessories need not stop at the neck this spring.

'Little gardening girls' might not seem like your typical starting point for a triumphant spring/summer 2009 Burberry Prorsum collection, but then Christopher Bailey has never been your typical designer. Models were clad in rain hats, silk dresses and waterproof cloaks and as such, Bailey's Burberry girls needed to look like "they have just come in from a summer shower," said MAC make-up artist Wendy Rowe. The result was a fresh-faced and youthful beauty, with a romantic feel, using naturals and taupes to achieve the English Country Garden effect.
